DIVINE ELECTION AND REPROBATION


ARTICLE 1

ALL MANKIND CONDEMNABLE BEFORE GOD

Since all men have sinned in Adam, lie under the curse, and deserve eternal death,1 God would have done no one an injustice if it had been His will to leave the whole human race in sin and under the curse, and to condemn it on account of its sin, according to these words of the apostle: so that ... the whole world [may be] held accountable to God. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:19, 23); and, the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23)

ARTICLE 2

THE SENDING OF THE SON OF GOD

But this is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world (1 Jn 4:9), that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (Jn 3:16).

THE PREACHING OF THE GOSPEL

So that men may be brought to faith, God mercifully sends heralds of this most joyful message to whom He will and when He wills.1 By their ministry men are called to repentance and to
